Oriental Cypress, the official city tree of Beijing. It symbolizes the courage and strength of the Chinese people, their simple, hard working nature and their defiance in the face of aggression.

Ume, also known as Prunus mume, which is cultivated for its fruit and flowers. It originates from China, and was brought to Japan and Korea later. Ume can be broadly divided by colour into white, pink, red, purple, and light green types. It is also one of the widely used flower/plant during Chinese New Year

Magnolia is an ancient genus. Having evolved before bees appeared, the flowers developed to encourage pollination by beetles. As a result, the carpels of Magnolia flowers are tough, to avoid damage by eating and crawling beetles. Also, Magnolias have long been known and used in China where references to their medicinal qualities go back to as early as 1083.

Willows are very cross-fertile and numerous hybrids occur, both naturally and in cultivation. A well known example is the weeping willow, which is a hybrid of a Chinese species and a European species – Peking willow and white willow.

Waratah is the official floral emblem of New South Wales in Australia since 1962. The original Waratah is native to a small area of the central coast of New South Wales, and it grows wildly in hilly areas near Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong, and on the slopes of the Great Dividing Range, whilst other species grow in Victoria and Tasmania. It is also the logo of the New South Wales Rugby!

As one species of a large genus of flora growing across Australia, Wattle is a symbol of unity. Chinese Lotus symbolizes ultimate purity and perfection because it rises untainted and beautiful from the mud. Every part of the plant, from roots to petals can be put to good use and has medicinal properties. As such, the plant as a whole, conveys deep significance. Both Beijing and Macau have chosen Lotus to be the city flower.

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, known colloquially as the Chinese Hibiscus, is an evergreen flowering shrub native to East Asia. It is also known as China rose and shoe flower. The flowers of Hiniscus are large, firm, but generally lack any scent. The flowers are generally red in the original varieties but also range from white through yellow and orange to scarlet and shades of pink.
